Earth Day Inspiration: Turn an Old Shirt Into a Pretty Basket

Earth day was Sunday and it inspired some much needed spring cleaning. I planned to donate clothes we didn’t want when I realized that some of my husband’s shirts would be great for locker hooking. A linen shirt in blue gingham caught my eye. I had to try it right away so…I tore the sleeves into strips and made one of my mini blossom baskets on 5-Mesh canvas. It’s a featured project in my Locking Loops book and a free pattern is available on Color Crazy. I’m calling this the Georgia Peach Blossom Basket. I love the texture of the linen. If you use linen for locker hooking make sure you tear thin strips. I accented with a peach gardenia flower. The Orange Creamsicle Rayon Ribbon from Color Crazy made a perfect fluffy loops accent on the top. Locker hooking is great for recycling or upcycling if you prefer to call it that. You end up giving old items a new life.

Add a Splash of Color with Ribbons–Bunny Wicker Planter

I needed to find an Easter gift for my French tutor and found this delightful bunny made out of wicker. My first thought was I’ll locker hook it! I try and locker hook everything these days. I tried and it was not possible. So I just wove some lavender, purple and fuchsia ribbons along the collar with a strip of recycled Sari Ribbon and puffed them out like loops. I left some length on the ends and tied a pretty bow. Tying on ribbons can make anything extra special.

Craft Month Giveaway:Last One–a Fantasy Flower Pin

It’s time for the last giveaway in honor of craft month and this one was so easy to choose. With my Mom’s birthday around the corner, and Mother’s Day not too far away, I decided on the materials for making a beautiful pin. I call this a “Fantasy Flower Pin” because you can get creative with favorite colors and accent with a bead or button. The instructions are in my Locking Loops book and it’s also included in this giveaway. These are great accents on hats, hair ornaments, belts, or as a pretty pin. They can be hooked on linen burlap, 6-mesh or 5-mesh canvas. I like to lightly paint the burlap with Lumiere paint for a subtle shimmer of color. The winner will receive, linen burlap, Lumiere paint, yarn, a bundle of Color Crazy Sari Ribbon, and a vintage button for an accent. Craft Month Giveaway: Next Up…a Floppy-Eared Bunny Basket

We’re on to week three of giveaways and with Easter and egg hunts around the corner, I thought a kit with materials for the Floppy-Eared Bunny basket would be the perfect giveaway. It’s featured in my Locking Loops book and is one of the sweetest items I’ve ever locker hooked. You could actually turn it into a puppy or a kitty cat by just changing the shape of the ears and adding whiskers. Craft Month Giveaways: This Week’s Winner, Next Giveaway–Sari Silk Bangle

I love doing giveaways. They really are a way to inspire more ways to create with locker hooking. This past week’s winner is Kathy Lauren. Congrats Kathy! Colorful Yarn Stories at CHA

I attended the Winter Craft & Hobby Show yesterday to do a couple of book signings for Locking Loops, and look at the latest offerings in crafts and supplies. I was most excited about the yarn and some new fibers I found for locker hooking. I’m looking forward to trying a new super-bulky bouclé from Lion Brand called Silky Twist. I’ll report on my results in a follow-on post. Below are some colorful and textural inspirations.

Colorful Kindle Covers–Hooked & Stitched

I’ve grown attached to my Kindle. I take it everywhere. So it was time to locker hook and stitch a protective cover. Stay tuned for free patterns and an instructional video on Color Crazy for making Kindle covers. You can design them to fit any Kindle–even the new Kindle Fire.

I’m always inspired by beautiful color combinations and this was certainly the case with my new Kindle cover design below. I bought a beautiful piece of fabric that is batik, but actually hand painted. The fabric colors are rich and layer beautifully. To preserve the look I used my new “ruched frames” technique that I think enhanced this layered look. Once I finished this one, I had to finish one I started last year. The second design uses a free form design with vibrant fuchsias and velvety chocolate petals. I used the Color Crazy Winter Berries Sari Strips to make the “ruched frame” for this one.

This Petals Kindle Cover uses chocolaty velvet strips for the petals with the “ruched frames” technique. The closures for both came easily–a vintage button for the first, with wood beads (I’d had these for ages!) and colorful beads for the second one. So glad I finished both of these. Now on to the next project…a new iPad cover design.

Top 10 Easy & Colorful Gift Ideas–#1 Beautifully Tied Book

Sometimes there isn’t enough time to finish crafting a gift. When you’ve reached a deadline for producing a gift, an easy thing to do is buy a book that your friend or loved one will treasure and tie it to create a beautiful wrap. You can take some shimmery ribbons, fabric strips, string or yarn in vibrant colors and even add a couple of beads to create a unique wrap. Below I wrapped a book with recycled Color Crazy Sari Ribbons and added some metallic yarn with a couple of shimmering beads for a nice accent.
