I’ve had this locker hooked design in my head for a long time. Actually, the design I’ve had in mind is larger and more complex, but I wanted to give this a try to see how it would turn out, so I created something a little smaller. This Floral Medallion measures 14 1/2″ in diameter. I locker hooked it with the ruched frames technique using the Color Crazy fabric strips in some of my favorite colors: Deep Indigo, Caribbean Teal, Copper, Tomato Red and Avocado. I don’t think the photos do it justice because the colors are super rich in real life. What’s different about this? Well, I wanted to try cutouts and it worked. I’m loving this piece. I can’t wait to try some more designs with this technique. You can use this design as a trivet, an interesting accent on a table or credenza, or even as wall art. They would certainly add a unique touch as chargers for a table setting.
Here’s the hand drawn design with the finished framed piece on 5-Mesh canvas. Edges were secured with a waterproof adhesive (my favorite is Quick Grip).
Here’s the locker hooked frames ready for the ruched padding and stitching. This ruched frames technique is featured in the Locking Loops book.
Once you have the design frames locker hooked, stitching on the padding and ruched stitching goes by quickly. It definitely gives it a quilted look in a cut-out design. Try doing this by tracing one of your favorite designs.

When I discovered that locker hooking as a needle craft, was the perfect technique for creating flower textures, I knew I had to get creative and produce some super colorful and textural designs. I always admired the texture you can achieve with traditional rug hooking using a latch hook, and beautiful embroidered florals. Turns out...
